I believe that many people who love drinking have tasted the delicious taste of whiskey. When drinking whiskey, it is very important to choose the right wine glass to help us taste the beauty of wine. So do you know how to choose a whisky glass?
There are three main factors in choosing a whisky glass:
1. Rim of the glass: It is related to where the tongue is in contact with the wine, which will affect the development of taste experience.
2. Cup mouth: divided into adduction cup type and open cup type. Retraction cup type: It is easier to gather the aroma of the wine. Open cup: weaken the impact of the aroma, easier to feel the delicate changes of the aroma. The brim is the most important factor to consider when choosing a wine glass.
3. The size of the cross-section of the belly: it is related to the area of contact between the wine and the air, and determines the oxidation rate of the wine. The slower the oxidation rate, the softer the smell and taste experience.
There are six main types of whisky glasses:
1. Classic cups
The Classic Glass is also one of the most recommended wine glasses today. It is also called “Tumbler Glass” because of its resemblance to the tumbler. There are many other names for classic cups, such as Old Fashioned Glass and Rock Glass.
The wine glass is a round barrel, short, the bottom of the cup is a circular arc raised, can make the cup easily shaken rotation, can let the whiskey flavor is fully released.
It is characterized by a thick bottom. That’s because whiskey is always on the rocks. Three or four ice cubes are dangling in it, and you can’t do without a certain thickness. The sound of ice bouncing back and forth against the glass in the glass was wonderful.
2. Copita Nosing Glass
The tulip cups are slim, professional, standardized, and durable. The rim is specially treated to allow drinkers to smell the aroma without experiencing the volatile irritation of high alcohol concentrations. Its advantage is that the aroma condensation effect is good, can fully show the fine aroma of wine.
Suitable for: pure drink; A high-alcohol, heavy-bodied whiskey.
3.ISO cup
ISO cup, known as the international standard cup, is a special competition cup in the wine competition. The ISO cup has strict rules on the size, including the height of the foot of the cup 155mm, the diameter of the widest part of the cup body 65mm, the diameter of the mouth 46mm, pour the wine into the widest part of the belly of the cup body, just about 50ml.
ISO cup has a good aroma collection effect, does not highlight any characteristics of the wine, the original appearance of the wine properly.
Suitable for: Professional blind tasting whisky.
4. Neat Glass
The pure cup is shaped like an antitraditional spittoon, with a flat base, a rounded belly and a large and exaggerated opening at the rim, which can reduce the alcoholic stimulation of whiskey and release a strong and mellow aroma in the cup. It is especially suitable for rare or aged whiskey.
In addition, the pure cup can also be used to drink brandy, rum, tequila and other spirits, it is a versatile cup.
Suitable for: rare or aged whisky, bourbon whisky.
5. Highball glass or Collins glass
Highball or Corinthian glasses are both straight cylindrical in appearance, but there is a slight difference in capacity. Highball glasses hold 8 to 10 ounces (1 ounce is about 28.35 milliliters), Corinthian glasses usually hold 12 ounces.
6. Glencairn Glass
Glencairn Scented Glass is a favorite of many Scotch whisky lovers. The slightly wide belly of the glass can hold enough whiskey, condense the aroma in the belly, and release it from the mouth of the glass. It is suitable for all kinds of whiskey or spirits.
Suitable for: Professional smelling and Scotch whisky.
So much knowledge of cups, I hope you can choose the right wine glasses in the next wine tasting, so as to better appreciate the aroma of whiskey.
